Puppy Development Stages
Neonatal (0–2 weeks): Eyes and ears closed. Completely dependent on mother. Equivalent to a newborn human.
Socialization (3–12 weeks): Critical learning period. Eyes open at 2 weeks, hearing at 3–4 weeks. Fear imprinting period begins at 8 weeks — this is the ideal adoption age.
Juvenile (3–6 months): Rapid growth. Puppy teeth falling out. Beginning to test boundaries. Equivalent to a 5–8 year old child.
Adolescence (6–18 months): Sexual maturity. Often pushes limits. Equivalent to a teenager (13–17 human years). Most challenging training period.
When Do Puppies Become Adult Dogs?
Small breeds (under 20 lbs): Reach adult size by 9–12 months. Considered adult at 1 year.
Medium breeds (20–50 lbs): Adult size by 12–15 months. Large breeds (50–90 lbs): Adult size by 18 months. Giant breeds (90+ lbs): May not reach full size until 18–24 months.
