About the FFMI Calculator
The Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) is a body composition metric that measures muscle mass relative to height, similar to how BMI measures total body mass relative to height. Unlike BMI, which does not distinguish between fat and muscle, FFMI specifically quantifies lean muscle development. It was popularized by a 1995 study by Kouri et al. comparing the FFMI of natural bodybuilders to those using anabolic steroids, establishing approximate natural limits.
FFMI is calculated by dividing your fat-free mass (weight minus fat mass) by height squared, using kilograms and meters. A normalized FFMI adjusts for height differences using the formula FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in meters). This normalization makes FFMIs comparable across people of different heights. The Kouri study found that virtually no natural athletes had a normalized FFMI above 25, while steroid users commonly exceeded 25.
To use the FFMI calculator, you need your body weight, height, and body fat percentage. Body fat percentage can be estimated through DEXA scans (most accurate), hydrostatic weighing, skinfold calipers (performed by a trained professional), or smart scales (less accurate). Even rough estimates of body fat produce a useful FFMI ballpark — the key insight is the scale of muscle development, not the exact number.
FFMI Score Interpretation
FFMI scores fall into several categories. A normalized FFMI below 18 is below average for those who engage in regular resistance training. Scores from 18–20 represent average to above-average muscle development for someone who trains consistently. Scores from 20–22 represent excellent development requiring years of dedicated training. Scores from 22–23 are considered superior — the upper range typically seen in natural competitive athletes.
A normalized FFMI from 23–25 is in the range where some researchers believe PED (performance-enhancing drug) use becomes increasingly likely, though a small number of genetically gifted natural athletes can legitimately reach 24–25. The 2021 natural bodybuilding world record holders cluster in this range. Above 25 is where the Kouri study found no confirmed natural athletes — though the researchers acknowledged this was based on athlete self-reporting, which may not be perfectly reliable.
It is important not to treat FFMI cutoffs as absolute determinations of drug use. Genetics vary enormously — some people naturally carry more muscle than average. The FFMI is one data point in a broader picture. Its greatest utility is for self-assessment: knowing your current FFMI helps you understand where you are on the spectrum of human muscle development and set realistic goals for where you might reach naturally given your frame and genetics.
