Army Body Fat Calculator 2026 — Height & Weight Standards

Calculate your Army body fat percentage using the official DoD tape measurement method. Check if you meet AR 600-9 body fat standards by gender and age group.

About the Army Body Fat Calculator 2026 — Height & Weight Standards

The Army Body Fat tape test is the official secondary screening tool when a soldier exceeds the AR 600-9 height-weight screening table. It uses circumference measurements — neck and abdomen for males, neck, waist, and hips for females — in the DoD formula to estimate body fat percentage.

Our calculator implements the exact DoD circumference method, compares your result to the AR 600-9 body fat standard for your age group and gender, and tells you whether you pass or fail the Army's body composition requirement.

DoD tape method: how it works

The formula differs by gender. Males: BF% = 86.010 × log₁₀(abdomen − neck) − 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76. Females: BF% = 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log₁₀(height) − 78.387. All measurements in inches. Measure abdomen at the navel level; neck below the larynx. The formula is accurate to ±3–4% compared to DEXA scanning.

AR 600-9 body fat standards

Male standards: 20% (age 17–20), 22% (21–27), 24% (28–39), 26% (40+). Female standards: 30%, 32%, 34%, 36% for the same age bands. Soldiers who fail are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). Monthly reassessments are required, and repeated failures can result in separation from service.

How to take measurements accurately

Use a non-stretchable measuring tape. Measure at the end of a normal exhale. Take each measurement three times and average them. Neck: horizontal, below the larynx. Abdomen (males): horizontal at the navel. Waist (females): horizontal at the narrowest point between the lower ribcage and top of the hip bones. Hips (females): horizontal at the widest point below the waist.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Army tape test is the circumference-based body fat measurement used when a soldier exceeds their height/weight screening weight. It uses neck and abdomen (males) or neck, waist, and hip (females) measurements in the DoD formula to estimate body fat percentage under AR 600-9.
