The final exam grade calculator tells you exactly what score you need on your final exam to achieve your desired overall grade in a course.
Formula: Required final exam grade = (Desired course grade − Current grade × (1 − Final exam weight)) ÷ Final exam weight.
Example: You have an 82% current grade, want a 90%, and your final is worth 30% of your grade. Required final = (90 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 108.7% — you cannot reach 90%.
How the Final Exam Calculator Works
The formula assumes your current grade represents the non-final portion of your grade. If the final is worth 30%, your current grade counts for 70%.
Required final = (Target grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight. All values as decimals or percentages.
What If You Need Over 100%?
If the calculator returns over 100%, your target grade is mathematically impossible given your current standing and the exam's weight. You'll need to adjust your target grade.
If you only need a very low score (under 50%), the course grade may be achievable without much effort, but always aim for your best performance.
