How Age Is Calculated Using the Gregorian Calendar
The Gregorian calendar, introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 and now used as the international standard, is the framework within which virtually all modern age calculations take place. It divides the year into 12 months of varying lengths — 28 to 31 days — and groups years into regular 365-day years and leap years of 366 days. Calculating the difference between two dates on this calendar requires accounting for these variable month lengths and irregular year lengths, which is why manual age calculations become error-prone and why automated calculators are preferred for anything beyond whole-year estimates.
The standard method for calculating age is to count the number of complete years, months, and days that have elapsed since the birth date. A new year of age begins on each birthday. A new month of age begins on the same date in each subsequent month — if you are born on the 15th, your next month of age begins on the 15th of the following month. Days are counted from the last monthly anniversary to today. This method produces the age figure you would report in everyday conversation: 'I am 34 years, 7 months, and 12 days old.' It is also the calculation used for most legal and administrative purposes.
Different countries and contexts handle the moment of age advancement slightly differently. In most Western legal systems, you attain a new year of age at the very start of your birthday — the moment midnight passes on the anniversary date. In some jurisdictions, the legal rule is that you attain an age the day before your birthday, because Roman law counted the day of birth as the first day. Leap Year Considerations in Age Calculations
A leap year occurs in most years divisible by four, with the exception of years divisible by 100 — unless they are also divisible by 400. This means 2000 was a leap year, 1900 was not, and 2100 will not be. The purpose of this correction is to keep the calendar year aligned with the astronomical (solar) year of approximately 365.2422 days. Without leap years, the calendar would drift by about 6 hours per year — accumulating to a full month's discrepancy in roughly 130 years. For most people, leap years have no effect on age calculations beyond slightly altering the day count for years that contain February 29. For the roughly 1 in 1,461 people born on February 29 — known colloquially as 'leaplings' or 'leap year babies' — the question of when they celebrate their birthday in non-leap years has both social and legal dimensions. Mathematically, a leap day birthday falls between February 28 and March 1 in common years. Most jurisdictions default to March 1 as the legal birthday in common years — meaning a person born on February 29, 2000 legally turned 18 on March 1, 2018 in most countries. Others use February 28.

How Age Is Measured in Different Cultures
While the Western convention is that you are zero years old at birth and become 1 year old on your first birthday, the traditional East Asian age reckoning system — historically used in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam — counts age differently. Japan similarly used the traditional East Asian counting system historically but adopted the Western 'man age' system for official purposes in the Meiji era. China officially uses the international age system for most purposes but the traditional system persists in some regional and cultural contexts. Vietnam's traditional system was similar, though it also adopted international standards.
