How the final exam grade formula works
Course Grade = Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight) + Final Exam Score × Final Weight. Solving for the needed exam score: Needed Score = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight. For example, with a current grade of 82%, a 20% final, and a target of 90%: needed = (90 − 82 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = (90 − 65.6) ÷ 0.20 = 122%. That's not possible — adjust expectations.
What if you need more than 100%?
If the calculator returns a needed score above 100%, the desired final grade is mathematically out of reach based on your current grade and the final's weight. At that point, consider: verifying extra credit opportunities with your professor, checking whether there's a makeup assignment, or adjusting your target grade. Focus energy on the next highest achievable letter grade.
