The dog age calculator converts your dog's age into equivalent human years using a more accurate method than the simple '7× rule'.
Research, including a 2020 study in Cell Systems using DNA methylation (epigenetic clocks), suggests dogs age rapidly in their first 2 years and then slow down. A 1-year-old dog is comparable to a 30-year-old human.
Size also matters: small dogs live longer and age slower than large breeds. A 10-year-old Chihuahua is about 56 in human years, while a 10-year-old Great Dane is closer to 67.
How Dog Age Compares to Human Age
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) suggests: The first year of a medium-sized dog's life ≈ 15 human years. Year 2 ≈ 9 more human years. Each subsequent year ≈ 5 human years.
This gives a 10-year-old medium dog roughly 63 human years (15 + 9 + 5×8). The simple 7× rule would give 70, which overestimates age in middle years.
Dog Age by Size Comparison
Small dogs (under 20 lbs): 1 yr = ~15 human years. 10 yrs = ~56. 15 yrs = ~76. They often live to 14–16 years.
Large dogs (over 90 lbs): 1 yr = ~15 human years. 10 yrs = ~67. They often live to only 8–11 years due to faster cell aging.
