Understanding BMI: What Your Number Really Means
BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a simple ratio of weight to height that has been used since the 1970s as a quick screening tool for weight categories. It is not a diagnostic measure — it cannot directly measure body fat — but it gives healthcare providers a fast, inexpensive starting point for assessing weight-related health risk.
The formula is straightforward: BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²). In imperial units: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) / height² (inches²). A result between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal weight, 25–29.9 overweight, and 30+ obese.

The Four BMI Categories
Underweight (BMI below 18.5): This range is associated with nutritional deficiencies, weakened immune function, and bone density loss. It does not necessarily mean someone is unhealthy — some people are naturally lean — but it warrants attention, particularly if accompanied by fatigue or hair loss.
Normal weight (BMI 18.5–24.9): Associated with the lowest risk of weight-related illness in large population studies. This is the range most clinical guidelines aim for, though 'normal' for your body can vary based on age, sex, ethnicity, and muscle mass.
Overweight (BMI 25–29.9) and Obese (BMI 30+): These ranges are associated with higher risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, and certain cancers. Obesity is further subdivided into Class I (30–34.9), Class II (35–39.9), and Class III (40+), with rising risk at each level.
Limitations of BMI You Should Know
BMI does not distinguish fat from muscle. A 200-pound athlete with 10% body fat and a 200-pound sedentary adult with 35% body fat have the same BMI — but vastly different health profiles. Many elite athletes are classified 'overweight' by BMI.
BMI underestimates risk in people who carry fat centrally (around the abdomen). Waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio are better predictors of metabolic risk. A man with a 42-inch waist has elevated cardiovascular risk regardless of his BMI.
BMI also varies in accuracy by ethnicity. At the same BMI, people of South and East Asian descent typically carry a higher percentage of body fat and face higher metabolic risk than people of European descent. Some clinical guidelines use lower thresholds for Asian populations.
Better Metrics to Use Alongside BMI
Body fat percentage (measured by DEXA scan, hydrostatic weighing, or a body fat calculator using body measurements) directly quantifies fat mass vs. lean mass. Healthy ranges are roughly 10–20% for men and 18–28% for women, though definitions vary by source.
Waist circumference is a simple but powerful predictor of abdominal fat and metabolic risk. Health risk increases at waist measurements above 35 inches (89 cm) for women and 40 inches (102 cm) for men, according to the National Institutes of Health.
The Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) correlates well with cardiovascular risk across different ethnicities. A ratio below 0.5 (meaning your waist is less than half your height) is generally considered healthy and is particularly useful for assessing central obesity.
