About the Body Shape Calculator
Understanding your body shape helps you choose clothes that flatter your figure, highlight your best features, and create visual balance. Our body shape calculator classifies your figure into one of five classic categories based on your bust, waist, and hip measurements.
The five main body shapes — hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, and inverted triangle — each have different proportion relationships. Our tool uses the industry-standard measurement ratios to identify which shape fits you best, along with style advice for each.
The five body shape categories explained
Hourglass: bust and hips similar, defined waist. Pear (triangle): hips wider than bust. Apple (round): bust and midsection wider, narrower hips. Rectangle (straight): all measurements similar, little waist definition. Inverted triangle: broad shoulders/bust, narrower hips. Some bodies fall between categories — treat the classification as a starting point for style, not a rigid label.
How to take accurate body measurements
Use a soft measuring tape and measure at the fullest part of each area. Bust: across the fullest part of the chest (nipple line), keeping the tape level around the back. Waist: at the narrowest point of your torso, typically 1 inch above the navel. Hips: at the widest part of your hips and buttocks, usually 7–9 inches below the waist. Stand naturally, don't suck in.
Why all body shapes are equally valid
The body shape system is a practical styling tool, not a value judgment or health indicator. Fashion trends have historically favored different shapes at different times — the 'ideal' has changed dramatically from the Victorian era to the 1920s flapper, the 1950s hourglass, the 1990s waif, and current diverse representation. Every shape has flattering clothing options and famous, celebrated figures who share it.
