Army Height and Weight Calculator

Check Army height and weight standards per AR 600-9. Instantly see if you pass or fail the screening weight for your height and gender, plus body fat standards by age group.

About the Army Height and Weight Calculator

The Army's height and weight standards under AR 600-9 are the first gate in the Body Composition Program. Failing the screening weight doesn't automatically mean failure — it triggers the tape test, where actual body fat percentage is measured. Our calculator shows both your screening weight status and the body fat standard for your age group.

Whether you're preparing for Basic Training, a unit inspection, or NCOER season, use this tool to check your standing against the AR 600-9 table and give yourself time to correct course before an official weigh-in.

How the Army weight screening process works

All Soldiers are weighed at least twice per year. If a Soldier exceeds the screening weight for their height, they undergo the body fat tape test. The tape test uses neck and abdomen circumference (males) or neck, waist, and hip measurements (females) in a standardized DoD formula. Soldiers who exceed the body fat standard are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) and must show monthly progress or face separation.

Army body fat standards by age and gender

Male standards: 20% (17–20), 22% (21–27), 24% (28–39), 26% (40+). Female standards: 30% (17–20), 32% (21–27), 34% (28–39), 36% (40+). These are more lenient than previous versions of the standard and align with the Army's shift toward overall fitness rather than weight-centric metrics under the new ACFT framework.

Strategies for meeting Army weight and body fat standards

The most effective approach combines caloric deficit (300–500 kcal/day), strength training to preserve lean mass, and cardio to accelerate fat loss. APFT and ACFT performance also correlates with body composition, so improved fitness and weight management reinforce each other. Crash dieting before a weigh-in is counterproductive and can harm performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Failing the screening weight triggers a tape test. If the tape test shows body fat above standard, the Soldier is enrolled in the ABCP with mandatory monthly progress checks. Failure to make satisfactory progress after a defined period can result in separation from the Army.
