About the TV Mounting Height Calculator
Mounting a TV at the wrong height is one of the most common home theater mistakes — too high causes neck strain, too low interrupts sightlines. Our TV mounting height calculator uses your TV size, viewing distance, and seating height to recommend the precise center-point height for a comfortable, ergonomic viewing experience.
The formula places the TV center 6–10° below eye level — the position where your neck muscles are most relaxed during extended viewing, per ergonomics research. It also checks if the top of the screen exceeds 15° above eye level, which is the threshold for discomfort.
The viewing angle formula explained
The optimal TV mount height positions the center of the screen slightly below seated eye level — typically 5–8° downward gaze angle. This mirrors how you naturally hold your head when relaxed. For a typical sofa height of 17" and a person with a 28" eye-above-seat measurement, eye level is about 45" from the floor. For a 55" TV (27" tall), the center should be around 41–43" from the floor.
TV height vs. screen size: common mistakes
The most common mistake is mounting above a fireplace — this forces a 20–30° upward gaze angle that causes neck fatigue in under an hour. If you must mount above a fireplace, use a tilting mount to angle the screen downward and keep viewing sessions short. The ideal scenario keeps the TV center within 10" of seated eye level regardless of screen size.
16:9 screen dimensions by diagonal size
A 55" TV measures approximately 47.9" wide × 27" tall. A 65" TV is 56.7" × 31.9". An 85" TV is 74" × 41.6". Knowing the actual screen height helps you calculate how far the bottom edge will sit from the floor — generally 18–24" off the floor is comfortable for sofa viewing, preventing viewers from looking up uncomfortably.
