When mixing music, syncing your reverb tails and delay times to the tempo of the track creates a sense of cohesion — effects feel like part of the music rather than something added on top. A delay timed to an eighth note at 120 BPM will pulse with the music naturally; an off-tempo delay can make even the best performance feel muddy or out of control. This is why delay and reverb calculators are standard tools in professional mixing setups.
The fundamental relationship is simple: at 120 BPM, one beat (quarter note) lasts exactly 500 milliseconds (60,000 ÷ BPM). An eighth note is half that (250ms), a sixteenth is 125ms, a dotted quarter is 750ms, and so on. These values are entered directly into delay plugins, reverb pre-delay controls, and sometimes modulation rates to create perfectly rhythmic effects.

How to Use Delay Times in Music Production
The most iconic use of tempo-synced delay is the dotted-eighth-note delay, popularized by U2's The Edge. By setting a stereo delay to a dotted-eighth note value, the repeated echoes fall on the upbeats between beats, creating a syncopated, driving texture that sits perfectly in the groove. This effect works across genres and remains one of the most useful tools in a mixing engineer's arsenal.
Pre-delay on reverb is a subtle but powerful control. By delaying the onset of reverb by 10–30 milliseconds, you allow the direct (dry) signal's transient to fully register before the reverb bloom begins. This gives clarity to vocals, snare drums, and lead instruments. A common workflow is to set pre-delay to approximately one-sixteenth note at the track tempo — this keeps the reverb rhythmically anchored while providing just enough separation to maintain clarity.
Ping-pong delays alternate echoes between left and right channels, creating a wide stereo image. Triplet delays (two-thirds of the beat length) create an implied shuffle or swing rhythm that works well over funky or Motown-style grooves. Quarter-note delays doubled at a very long decay create an ambient sound bed. Understanding which note subdivision serves your musical goal — and having the exact millisecond values at hand — makes your session workflow dramatically faster.
