About the Mulch Calculator
Mulch is one of the most cost-effective investments in any garden. A 2–4 inch layer of organic mulch conserves soil moisture, suppresses weeds, regulates soil temperature, and breaks down over time to enrich the soil with organic matter. The challenge is knowing how much to buy — too little and the bed looks sparse and weeds break through; too much and you waste money and risk root rot from excess moisture retention. Our mulch calculator takes the guesswork out by converting your bed dimensions directly into bags or cubic yards.
The standard formula for mulch volume is: Cubic Feet = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (inches) / 12. Divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards. Bagged mulch is sold in 2 cubic foot or 3 cubic foot bags — divide total cubic feet by bag size to find the number of bags needed. A 3-inch deep application over a 10 × 20 foot garden bed requires 50 cubic feet, or about 25 bags of 2 cu ft mulch, or 17 bags of 3 cu ft mulch.

How Much Mulch Do I Need?
The recommended mulch depth depends on the type of mulch and intended purpose. For wood chips and shredded bark, 2–3 inches is standard for weed suppression and moisture retention. Going deeper than 4 inches risks creating anaerobic conditions that can harm plant roots and create habitat for pests. For inorganic mulches like rubber or gravel, 1.5–2 inches is typically sufficient. In all cases, keep mulch a few inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot.
For large areas, bulk mulch delivered by the cubic yard is almost always cheaper per cubic foot than bagged mulch. One cubic yard = 27 cubic feet, which covers roughly 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, or 162 square feet at 2 inches deep. A standard pickup truck bed holds about 2–3 cubic yards of mulch. If you are mulching more than 200–300 square feet, get quotes from local landscaping suppliers for bulk delivery.
Factor in approximately 10% extra for settling and irregular edges. Freshly laid mulch is fluffy and will compact to a lesser depth over the first few weeks as it settles and the bottom layer begins to decompose. Budgeting for a little extra ensures your final depth matches your target rather than falling short after settling.
