How overtime pay works
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires non-exempt employees to be paid at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked over 40 per week. Some states (California, Alaska) require daily overtime for hours over 8 per day. Our calculator applies the federal 1.5× rule to any hours you enter as overtime. Double time (2×) applies in specific California situations and some union contracts.
FICA taxes: Social Security and Medicare
FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) taxes are automatic and not affected by filing status or deductions. In 2025: Social Security is 6.2% on wages up to $176,100. Medicare is 1.45% on all wages, plus an additional 0.9% on wages over $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married). Total FICA is 7.65% for most workers.
States with no income tax
Nine states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Workers in these states keep significantly more of their paycheck compared to high-tax states like California (up to 13.3%), Oregon (up to 9.9%), or New York (up to 10.9%). Our calculator automatically applies zero state tax for these states.
