How to Use the Final Grade Calculator
To use this calculator, you need three pieces of information: your current grade (as a percentage), your desired final course grade (as a percentage), and the percentage weight the final exam carries in your course grading scheme. These are all typically available on your course syllabus. If your grade is expressed as a letter, convert it to a percentage first: A = 93, A- = 90, B+ = 87, B = 83, B- = 80, and so on.
The formula used is: Final Exam Score Needed = (Target Grade - Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight. For example, if your current grade is 78%, your target is 80%, and the final is worth 30% of your grade: (80 - 78 × 0.70) / 0.30 = (80 - 54.6) / 0.30 = 25.4 / 0.30 = 84.7%. You would need an 84.7% on your final to finish with an 80% in the course.
