CSN (Centrala studiestödsnämnden) is the Swedish government agency that administers student financial support (studiestöd). For higher education, the support consists of two parts: a non-repayable grant (studiebidrag) and a repayable loan (studielån). Together, these make up the weekly studiemedel amount — approximately 1,426 SEK/week at full-time pace in 2025/2026.
The grant (studiebidrag) of approximately 418 SEK/week is free money that does not need to be repaid. The loan (studielån) of approximately 1,008 SEK/week must be repaid starting the year after graduation, with a typical 25-year repayment period. Understanding the split is important for financial planning — many students treat the entire studiemedel as income without accounting for the loan component.
The amount you receive is also income-tested. If you earn above a certain income threshold while studying (approximately 56,000 SEK/year at full-time pace in 2026), your eligibility for studiemedel may be reduced.
