About the Retrenchment Package Calculator South Africa — Severance Pay 2025
A retrenchment package in South Africa is the total payout you receive when dismissed for operational reasons — also called severance pay or a severance package. It typically has three components: statutory severance pay (calculated under BCEA section 41), notice pay, and leave pay for any unused annual leave. Knowing how each component is calculated before you enter any discussion with your employer is the single most useful thing you can do.
Severance pay meaning under South African law: one week's remuneration for every completed year of continuous service. From March 2025 the weekly remuneration cap is R25,765 — if your actual weekly pay is higher, the cap applies. 'Remuneration' includes your salary plus regular allowances and benefits, but excludes discretionary bonuses. An employee retrenched after 8 years earning R18,000/month (R4,154/week) is entitled to 8 × R4,154 = R33,231 in severance pay as a minimum.
Your full retrenchment package should also include notice pay (1–4 weeks depending on service length) and pay for outstanding leave days — both taxed as ordinary income. The severance pay component benefits from a significant tax exemption: the first R500,000 received across all retrenchment and retirement lump sums in your lifetime is tax-free.
