New York City sales tax: 8.875% breakdown
NYC's 8.875% consists of: NY State 4% + NYC Local 4.5% + MTA MCTD surcharge 0.375%. The MTA (Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District) surcharge applies to NYC and surrounding counties: Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess, and Putnam. Outside NYC but inside the MTA zone, the surcharge still applies on top of state and county rates.
What is and isn't taxable in New York
