About the Kenya SHIF Calculator 2025 (Social Health Insurance Fund)

Kenya's Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) replaced the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) on 1 October 2024. Administered by the Social Health Authority (SHA), SHIF uses a percentage-based contribution model: 2.75% of gross monthly salary, deducted at source by employers and remitted by the 9th of each month. Unlike the old NHIF, which used fixed tiered rates capped at KSh 1,700 per month, SHIF has no earnings cap — higher earners pay proportionally more.

A series of court challenges initially suspended some SHIF provisions, but from January 2025, following court rulings, SHIF contributions no longer have a minimum floor — meaning low-income earners pay 2.75% of their actual salary rather than a minimum amount. All formal sector employees are automatically enrolled; self-employed individuals and informal workers can register as voluntary members through the SHA portal (sharedhealth.or.ke).

SHIF covers inpatient treatment at public hospitals and accredited private facilities, with the scope of benefits still being expanded from the NHIF baseline. For most employees earning more than approximately KSh 62,000 per month, SHIF costs more than old NHIF — this calculator shows the exact comparison for your salary level so you understand the impact on your net pay.
